Which image format should you use?
For photographs on a website, WebP at quality 75–85 is usually the right answer: roughly 30% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, with support in every current browser. AVIF goes smaller still if your audience is modern browsers only.
For anything with transparency, sharp edges or text — logos, screenshots, UI assets — use PNG. JPEG's compression is tuned for photographic gradients and produces visible artefacts around hard edges.
For maximum compatibility, especially with older software, print services or email, JPEG remains unbeaten. It opens everywhere.
Lossy and lossless, and why it matters
Lossy formats such as JPEG, WebP and AVIF discard information the eye is unlikely to miss. That is how they achieve small files, and it is permanent — the discarded detail cannot be recovered by converting to another format later.
Lossless formats such as PNG and TIFF store every pixel exactly. Converting a JPEG to PNG therefore does not repair it; it preserves the artefacts already there in a larger file. The useful direction is the other way, or between lossless formats.
What happens to transparency
PNG, WebP, AVIF and GIF can store transparency. JPEG cannot — it has no alpha channel at all. Converting a transparent PNG to JPEG therefore has to composite the image onto something, and FileTools360 defaults to white while letting you choose.
GIF's transparency is binary: each pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent, which is why GIFs with soft edges show jagged fringes. PNG and WebP store partial transparency properly.
What happens to metadata
Photos carry EXIF metadata: camera model, exposure settings, and often GPS coordinates recording exactly where the picture was taken. Because FileTools360 re-encodes from raw pixels, that metadata does not carry across by default.
