HEIC to JPG Converter

Turn HEIC files into JPG in a couple of clicks. Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. The universal lossy photo format. The output is re-encoded, so quality depends on the settings you choose.

HEIC and JPG explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

JPEG is a lossy image format designed for photographs. It works by discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice, particularly in colour and in smooth gradients, which is why it compresses photos far better than it compresses text or line art.

Where HEIC files come from
Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where JPG is used
Digital cameras, phone screenshots on Android, and essentially every photo on the pre-2015 web.

HEIC vs JPG

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

HEIC is stronger at
About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.
JPG is stronger at
Opens on literally every device, browser and application ever made. Small files for photographic content. Adjustable quality, so you control the size/fidelity trade-off.

Why convert HEIC to JPG?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. JPG is the better fit when you are sharing a photograph and compatibility matters more than squeezing out the last few kilobytes.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch
Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up
No transparency — there is no alpha channel at all. Visible artefacts around sharp edges and text.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Both HEIC and JPG are lossy, so this is a re-encode: the file is decoded and compressed again. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see, but each successive re-encode compounds. If you will need the file again later, keep the HEIC original rather than converting back and forth.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.

Saving a JPEG at 100% quality is still lossy — it is a large file that has been through the same discarding process, not a lossless copy.
