No. BMP is a lossless format, so the conversion preserves exactly what is in your HEIC file. Note that it cannot recover detail that was already discarded when the HEIC was first created — a lossless container does not undo earlier compression.

HEIC and BMP explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

BMP stores pixels essentially raw, with little or no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP is around 6 MB regardless of what the picture contains, because every pixel takes the same space whether it is part of a gradient or a flat colour.

Where HEIC files come from: Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where BMP is used: Legacy Windows software, some scientific and industrial imaging tools.

HEIC is stronger at: About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.
BMP is stronger at: Trivially simple to read and write. No compression artefacts whatsoever. Still readable by very old software.

Why convert HEIC to BMP?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. BMP is the better fit when a legacy application specifically requires it.

Be aware of the size trade-off: BMP is uncompressed, so expect the converted file to be considerably larger than the HEIC you started with.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch: Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up: Enormous files. No standard support for transparency in most variants.

Does converting HEIC to BMP reduce quality?

Going from HEIC to BMP moves already-compressed data into a format that stores it exactly. Nothing is lost from this point on, but nothing is recovered either — the detail HEIC discarded when the file was first created is gone permanently. Expect a noticeably larger file for identical visual quality.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.
