Does converting to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so some data is discarded. At the default quality the difference is very hard to see or hear; raise the quality setting if you need to be certain, at the cost of a larger file.

How large a file can I convert?

Up to 200 MB per file for this conversion. Because the work happens in your browser, the practical limit is your device's memory — larger files work on a desktop with plenty of RAM and may fail on an older phone.

PDF and JPG explained

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

JPEG is a lossy image format designed for photographs. It works by discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice, particularly in colour and in smooth gradients, which is why it compresses photos far better than it compresses text or line art.

Where PDF files come from: Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.
Where JPG is used: Digital cameras, phone screenshots on Android, and essentially every photo on the pre-2015 web.

Why convert PDF to JPG?

A PDF page is a set of drawing instructions, not a picture. Converting to JPG runs those instructions and captures the result as pixels, which is what you want when something needs an image rather than a document — a thumbnail, a slide, a forum post, or a system that only accepts images.

PDF limitations that prompt the switch: Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run. Can be large when it contains high-resolution images.
What you give up: No transparency — there is no alpha channel at all. Visible artefacts around sharp edges and text.

Does converting PDF to JPG reduce quality?

PDF stores your data exactly; JPG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your PDF original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.

Saving a JPEG at 100% quality is still lossy — it is a large file that has been through the same discarding process, not a lossless copy.
