HEIC and ICO explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

ICO is a container that holds several versions of the same icon at different sizes, so the operating system or browser can pick the one that fits. It is capped at 256×256 pixels.

Where HEIC files come from: Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where ICO is used: Website favicons and Windows application icons.

HEIC is stronger at: About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.

Why convert HEIC to ICO?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. ICO is the better fit when you are making a favicon or a Windows application icon.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch: Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up: Capped at 256×256. Not a general-purpose image format.

Does converting HEIC to ICO reduce quality?
