HEIC to PNG Converter

Turn HEIC files into PNG in a couple of clicks. Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Lossless image format with full alpha transparency. The conversion is lossless — every pixel, sample or byte in the source is preserved.

HEIC and PNG explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

PNG is a lossless raster format built to replace GIF. It stores every pixel exactly as given and supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, which means genuine partial transparency rather than the single transparent colour GIF offers.

Where HEIC files come from
Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where PNG is used
Screenshots, exported logos and UI assets, and anything designed rather than photographed.

HEIC vs PNG

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

HEIC is stronger at
About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.
PNG is stronger at
Completely lossless — re-saving never degrades the image. Full alpha transparency, including soft edges and shadows. Sharp text and hard edges stay sharp.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. PNG is the better fit when the image has transparency, text, screenshots, logos, or you need an exact pixel-for-pixel copy.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch
Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up
Much larger than JPEG or WebP for photographic content. No animation in practice (APNG exists but support is inconsistent).

Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?

Going from HEIC to PNG moves already-compressed data into a format that stores it exactly. Nothing is lost from this point on, but nothing is recovered either — the detail HEIC discarded when the file was first created is gone permanently. Expect a noticeably larger file for identical visual quality.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.

Converting a JPEG to PNG does not improve its quality. It freezes the image exactly as it already is, artefacts included, in a larger file.

Converting HEIC to PNG cannot restore detail that the original encoder already discarded. It preserves exactly what is there today — nothing more.
