HEIC to GIF Converter

Turn HEIC files into GIF in a couple of clicks. Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. 256-colour animated format, still ubiquitous. The output is re-encoded, so quality depends on the settings you choose.

HEIC and GIF explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where GIF is used
Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.

HEIC vs GIF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

HEIC is stronger at
About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.
GIF is stronger at
Animation plays anywhere without a video player. Universally supported, including in email and old forums. Lossless within its 256-colour limit.

Why convert HEIC to GIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. GIF is the better fit when you need a short animation that autoplays in a context where video is not allowed.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch
Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up
256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4.

Does converting HEIC to GIF reduce quality?

Going from HEIC to GIF moves already-compressed data into a format that stores it exactly. Nothing is lost from this point on, but nothing is recovered either — the detail HEIC discarded when the file was first created is gone permanently. Expect a noticeably larger file for identical visual quality.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.
