Does converting to AVIF reduce quality?

AVIF uses lossy compression, so some data is discarded. At the default quality the difference is very hard to see or hear; raise the quality setting if you need to be certain, at the cost of a larger file.

HEIC and AVIF explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

AVIF stores still images using the AV1 video codec's intra-frame compression. It generally achieves the smallest files of any widely supported format, and it handles wide colour gamut and HDR, which JPEG cannot.

Where HEIC files come from: Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where AVIF is used: Performance-focused websites and modern image pipelines.

Why convert HEIC to AVIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. AVIF is the better fit when you control the audience (a modern website) and file size is the priority.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch: Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up: Encoding is slow compared with JPEG or WebP. Desktop application support is still thin.

Does converting HEIC to AVIF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.
