HEIC to WebP Converter

Turn HEIC files into WebP in a couple of clicks. Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Modern web format, ~30% smaller than JPG at similar quality. The output is re-encoded, so quality depends on the settings you choose.

HEIC and WebP explained

HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos taken on iPhone since iOS 11, holding images compressed with HEVC. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and can hold extras such as depth maps and Live Photo frames.

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

Where HEIC files come from
Every iPhone photo taken since 2017, unless the camera format was changed to “Most Compatible”.
Where WebP is used
Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.

HEIC vs WebP

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

HEIC is stronger at
About half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Supports 16-bit colour, so gradients band less than in JPEG. Can store transparency, depth data and image sequences.
WebP is stronger at
Substantially smaller than JPEG at similar quality. Supports transparency, which JPEG cannot. Supports animation, replacing GIF at a fraction of the size.

Why convert HEIC to WebP?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIC: you are sharing photos with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, or emailing them. WebP is the better fit when you are publishing images on a website and want smaller files without a visible quality drop.

HEIC limitations that prompt the switch
Poor support outside Apple platforms — Windows needs a paid codec, many web apps reject it. Encumbered by HEVC patent licensing, which is why adoption stalled. Older Android devices cannot open it at all.
What you give up
Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it.

Does converting HEIC to WebP reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

HEIC is not an Apple-invented format. It is the MPEG HEIF standard; Apple simply shipped it first and at scale.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.
