JPG and SVG explained

JPEG is a lossy image format designed for photographs. It works by discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice, particularly in colour and in smooth gradients, which is why it compresses photos far better than it compresses text or line art.

SVG is not a picture of an image — it is XML describing shapes, paths and text. Because it stores instructions rather than pixels, it renders perfectly at any size, from a favicon to a billboard.

Where JPG files come from: Digital cameras, phone screenshots on Android, and essentially every photo on the pre-2015 web.
Where SVG is used: Design tools like Figma and Illustrator, and icon libraries.

Why convert JPG to SVG?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of JPG: the image has transparency, sharp edges, text, or you plan to edit and re-save it repeatedly. SVG is the better fit when logos, icons, diagrams and anything that must stay sharp at every size.

JPG limitations that prompt the switch: No transparency — there is no alpha channel at all. Visible artefacts around sharp edges and text. Every re-save degrades the image further (generation loss).
What you give up: Useless for photographs. Complex illustrations can be slower to render than a bitmap.

Does converting JPG to SVG reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

Saving a JPEG at 100% quality is still lossy — it is a large file that has been through the same discarding process, not a lossless copy.

Converting a photo to SVG does not make it vector. It embeds the same bitmap inside an SVG wrapper — the file gets bigger and gains nothing.
