BMP and WebP explained

BMP stores pixels essentially raw, with little or no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP is around 6 MB regardless of what the picture contains, because every pixel takes the same space whether it is part of a gradient or a flat colour.

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

Where BMP files come from: Legacy Windows software, some scientific and industrial imaging tools.
Where WebP is used: Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.

BMP is stronger at: Trivially simple to read and write. No compression artefacts whatsoever. Still readable by very old software.

Why convert BMP to WebP?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of BMP: almost always — PNG gives you the same lossless fidelity in a fraction of the space. WebP is the better fit when you are publishing images on a website and want smaller files without a visible quality drop.

There is also a size argument: BMP stores data with little or no compression, so the WebP version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

BMP limitations that prompt the switch: Enormous files. No standard support for transparency in most variants. Effectively unusable on the web.
What you give up: Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it.

Does converting BMP to WebP reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.
