BMP and GIF explained

BMP stores pixels essentially raw, with little or no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP is around 6 MB regardless of what the picture contains, because every pixel takes the same space whether it is part of a gradient or a flat colour.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Where BMP files come from: Legacy Windows software, some scientific and industrial imaging tools.
Where GIF is used: Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.

BMP is stronger at: Trivially simple to read and write. No compression artefacts whatsoever. Still readable by very old software.
GIF is stronger at: Animation plays anywhere without a video player. Universally supported, including in email and old forums. Lossless within its 256-colour limit.

Why convert BMP to GIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of BMP: almost always — PNG gives you the same lossless fidelity in a fraction of the space. GIF is the better fit when you need a short animation that autoplays in a context where video is not allowed.

There is also a size argument: BMP stores data with little or no compression, so the GIF version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

BMP limitations that prompt the switch: Enormous files. No standard support for transparency in most variants. Effectively unusable on the web.
What you give up: 256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4.

Does converting BMP to GIF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.
