BMP and JPG explained

BMP stores pixels essentially raw, with little or no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP is around 6 MB regardless of what the picture contains, because every pixel takes the same space whether it is part of a gradient or a flat colour.

JPEG is a lossy image format designed for photographs. It works by discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice, particularly in colour and in smooth gradients, which is why it compresses photos far better than it compresses text or line art.

Where BMP files come from
Legacy Windows software, some scientific and industrial imaging tools.
Where JPG is used
Digital cameras, phone screenshots on Android, and essentially every photo on the pre-2015 web.

BMP vs JPG

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

BMP is stronger at
Trivially simple to read and write. No compression artefacts whatsoever. Still readable by very old software.
JPG is stronger at
Opens on literally every device, browser and application ever made. Small files for photographic content. Adjustable quality, so you control the size/fidelity trade-off.

Why convert BMP to JPG?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of BMP: almost always — PNG gives you the same lossless fidelity in a fraction of the space. JPG is the better fit when you are sharing a photograph and compatibility matters more than squeezing out the last few kilobytes.

There is also a size argument: BMP stores data with little or no compression, so the JPG version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

BMP limitations that prompt the switch
Enormous files. No standard support for transparency in most variants. Effectively unusable on the web.
What you give up
No transparency — there is no alpha channel at all. Visible artefacts around sharp edges and text.

Does converting BMP to JPG reduce quality?

BMP stores your data exactly; JPG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your BMP original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

Saving a JPEG at 100% quality is still lossy — it is a large file that has been through the same discarding process, not a lossless copy.
