HEIF and BMP explained

HEIF is the underlying container standard that HEIC is a specific profile of. The distinction matters mainly to developers: HEIF describes the box structure, while HEIC specifies HEVC-compressed contents inside it.

BMP stores pixels essentially raw, with little or no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP is around 6 MB regardless of what the picture contains, because every pixel takes the same space whether it is part of a gradient or a flat colour.

Why convert HEIF to BMP?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of HEIF: you need to share the file with anyone. BMP is the better fit when a legacy application specifically requires it.

Be aware of the size trade-off: BMP is uncompressed, so expect the converted file to be considerably larger than the HEIF you started with.

Does converting HEIF to BMP reduce quality?

Going from HEIF to BMP moves already-compressed data into a format that stores it exactly. Nothing is lost from this point on, but nothing is recovered either — the detail HEIF discarded when the file was first created is gone permanently. Expect a noticeably larger file for identical visual quality.
