HEIF and PDF explained

HEIF is the underlying container standard that HEIC is a specific profile of. The distinction matters mainly to developers: HEIF describes the box structure, while HEIC specifies HEVC-compressed contents inside it.

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

Where HEIF files come from
Newer cameras and some Android devices, alongside Apple's HEIC.
Where PDF is used
Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.

HEIF vs PDF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Looks identical on every device, in every viewer, when printed. Supports digital signatures, forms and embedded fonts. Universally readable without special software.

Why convert HEIF to PDF?

Converting HEIF images to PDF packages them into a single paginated document. That matters when you are submitting scans, assembling receipts, or sending several images to someone who should receive one file rather than an inbox full of attachments.

HEIF limitations that prompt the switch
Support outside Apple and recent Android is limited. Confusing overlap with HEIC in practice.
What you give up
Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run.

Does converting HEIF to PDF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.
