RAW and ICO explained

A camera RAW file is the sensor's unprocessed readout, plus the camera's settings as metadata. It is not really an image yet: it has to be developed, which is why the same RAW can produce very different-looking photos.

ICO is a container that holds several versions of the same icon at different sizes, so the operating system or browser can pick the one that fits. It is capped at 256×256 pixels.

RAW is stronger at: Maximum editing latitude — recover blown highlights and lifted shadows. 12 or 14 bits per channel instead of JPEG's 8. White balance and exposure remain fully adjustable after the fact.

Why convert RAW to ICO?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of RAW: you want to share, upload or print directly. ICO is the better fit when you are making a favicon or a Windows application icon.
