What “uploaded” normally means. On most online converters, pressing the button copies your file across the internet onto a computer owned by that website. That copy is what the word “upload” means, and it is the part nobody explains.

What happens instead. This site does not do it. There is no server here that receives files, so your image is read, converted and handed back by the browser you are using right now. It never travels — so there is no copy to store, read, leak or hand over.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Photographs carry more than what is in the frame — most also carry the time, the device and often the GPS coordinates where they were taken. It matters more than it sounds, because of what images usually are:

Passport and visa photos

biometric-grade images of your face

Screenshots of private messages

conversations that included other people

Photos of ID cards and licences

the usual way people send identity documents

account details, and proof of what you paid whom

A file that is never sent cannot be kept, leaked, subpoenaed or used to train anything. That is a property of how this works, not a promise about how carefully it is run.

How Remove Background works

Cut a subject out of its background and get a transparent PNG. Everything happens inside this page: the file is read from your device into memory, processed there, and handed back as a download. It is never sent anywhere, and closing the tab discards it.

What it accepts: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, HEIC, HEIF and 1 more. Files are identified by their contents rather than their name, so a mislabelled file is still handled correctly.
What you get back: A PNG file, downloaded straight to your device.
What happens to the data: The result is reconstructed rather than copied. It is genuinely useful, and it is worth reading before you rely on it.
Size limit: Up to 60 MB per file. Because the work happens on your own machine, available memory is the real constraint — a laptop handles far more than a phone.

The settings, and what each one changes

Remove Background exposes 9 settings. The defaults are chosen to suit the common case, so changing nothing is a reasonable way to start.

Method: The first understands what is in the photograph and works on a normal, cluttered picture. The second only spreads inwards from the edges: it is exact on a logo or a signature on white, needs no download, and fails on anything busier.
Edge strength: Higher gives a cleaner, harder cut. Lower keeps soft detail like hair and blur, at the cost of some background haze.
Keep only the main subject: Discards anything the model found that is not joined to the subject — the car behind yours, a sign, a second face. Turn it off when the picture really does contain several separate things you want to keep.
Replace it with: Choose between Nothing — transparent, A solid colour.
Colour: Free text, used exactly as you type it.
Plain-background tolerance: Only used by the instant method. Raise it if background remains; lower it if the subject is being eaten away.
Plain-background softness: Takes 0 to 100. Applied to every file in the batch.

Worth knowing before you start

This runs a salient-object model — U²-Net, 4 MB — in your browser to work out what the picture is actually of, then refits the edge to the photograph itself so hair and thin detail survive. It handles ordinary cluttered photographs: a car in a car park, a person on a street. The model is downloaded once from this site, never a third party, and cached afterwards; until it has loaded, or if it cannot, the tool falls back to the older edge-based method and tells you so. Nothing is perfect — check the result before relying on it, and turn off "keep only the main subject" if your picture genuinely contains several separate things.

That copy is what "upload" means. This tool does not do it: your file is read and processed by the browser you are using right now, stays on this device the whole time, and is discarded when you close the tab. Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works, which is the quickest way to confirm it.

Can I use this on confidential or personal documents?

Yes — that is the case it was built for. Because the file never leaves your device, a confidential document is no more exposed than it is sitting in your own folder: there is no transfer, no copy on anybody else's hardware, no retention period and no staff with access. Nothing about the file is logged either — not its name, not its size, not its contents.
