WebP and JPG explained

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

JPEG is a lossy image format designed for photographs. It works by discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice, particularly in colour and in smooth gradients, which is why it compresses photos far better than it compresses text or line art.

Where WebP files come from: Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.
Where JPG is used: Digital cameras, phone screenshots on Android, and essentially every photo on the pre-2015 web.

Why convert WebP to JPG?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WebP: the file needs to be opened by arbitrary desktop software, emailed to non-technical recipients, or sent to a print shop. JPG is the better fit when you are sharing a photograph and compatibility matters more than squeezing out the last few kilobytes.

WebP limitations that prompt the switch: Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it. Lossy WebP, like JPEG, degrades on re-save.
What you give up: No transparency — there is no alpha channel at all. Visible artefacts around sharp edges and text.

Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?

WebP stores your data exactly; JPG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your WebP original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.

Saving a JPEG at 100% quality is still lossy — it is a large file that has been through the same discarding process, not a lossless copy.
