WebP and GIF explained

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Where WebP files come from: Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.
Where GIF is used: Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.

Why convert WebP to GIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WebP: the file needs to be opened by arbitrary desktop software, emailed to non-technical recipients, or sent to a print shop. GIF is the better fit when you need a short animation that autoplays in a context where video is not allowed.

WebP limitations that prompt the switch: Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it. Lossy WebP, like JPEG, degrades on re-save.
What you give up: 256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4.

Does converting WebP to GIF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.
