GIF and WebP explained

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

Where GIF files come from: Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.
Where WebP is used: Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.

Why convert GIF to WebP?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of GIF: the content is photographic, longer than a few seconds, or would be better as MP4 or WebM. WebP is the better fit when you are publishing images on a website and want smaller files without a visible quality drop.

GIF limitations that prompt the switch: 256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4. Transparency is binary: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent, producing jagged edges.
What you give up: Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it.

Does converting GIF to WebP reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.
