GIF and MKV explained

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Matroska is a container designed to hold essentially anything: any codec, unlimited audio tracks, subtitle tracks, chapters and attachments in one file. It is the format of choice for archiving films with multiple languages.

Where GIF files come from
Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.
Where MKV is used
Media archives, anime and film collections, and high-quality recordings.

GIF vs MKV

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert GIF to MKV?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of GIF: the content is photographic, longer than a few seconds, or would be better as MP4 or WebM. MKV is the better fit when archiving or watching in a capable player such as VLC or a media server.

GIF limitations that prompt the switch
256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4. Transparency is binary: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent, producing jagged edges.
What you give up
Browsers will not play it. Many TVs, phones and editors reject it.

Does converting GIF to MKV reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.

Animation and timing are preserved. Video codecs handle gradients far better than GIF's 256-colour palette, so the result usually looks better and is much smaller.
