WOFF2 and TTF explained

WOFF2 uses Brotli compression, producing web fonts roughly 30% smaller than WOFF. It is the format every current browser prefers.

TrueType describes glyph outlines with quadratic curves and includes hinting instructions that improve rendering at small sizes on low-resolution screens.

WOFF2 vs TTF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert WOFF2 to TTF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WOFF2: desktop installation, or supporting very old browsers. TTF is the better fit when installing a font on a computer or using it in design software.

WOFF2 limitations that prompt the switch
No support in browsers older than roughly 2016. Not installable as a desktop font.
What you give up
Uncompressed, so it wastes bandwidth as a web font. Fewer advanced typographic features than OpenType.

What is preserved when converting WOFF2 to TTF?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
