OTF and TTF explained

OpenType extends TrueType with cubic curves and, more importantly, advanced typographic features: ligatures, small caps, stylistic alternates and proper multilingual shaping.

TrueType describes glyph outlines with quadratic curves and includes hinting instructions that improve rendering at small sizes on low-resolution screens.

OTF vs TTF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert OTF to TTF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of OTF: web delivery. TTF is the better fit when installing a font on a computer or using it in design software.

OTF limitations that prompt the switch
Uncompressed, so it is a poor web font. Advanced features need application support to be usable.
What you give up
Uncompressed, so it wastes bandwidth as a web font. Fewer advanced typographic features than OpenType.

What is preserved when converting OTF to TTF?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
