TTF and WOFF explained

TrueType describes glyph outlines with quadratic curves and includes hinting instructions that improve rendering at small sizes on low-resolution screens.

WOFF wraps a TrueType or OpenType font with compression and metadata, specifically for delivery over the web.

TTF vs WOFF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert TTF to WOFF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of TTF: serving fonts on a website — WOFF2 is far smaller. WOFF is the better fit when you must support browsers from before roughly 2016.

TTF limitations that prompt the switch
Uncompressed, so it wastes bandwidth as a web font. Fewer advanced typographic features than OpenType.
What you give up
Around 30% larger than WOFF2. Superseded for any modern browser target.

What is preserved when converting TTF to WOFF?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
