OTF and WOFF2 explained

OpenType extends TrueType with cubic curves and, more importantly, advanced typographic features: ligatures, small caps, stylistic alternates and proper multilingual shaping.

WOFF2 uses Brotli compression, producing web fonts roughly 30% smaller than WOFF. It is the format every current browser prefers.

OTF vs WOFF2

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Browser supportEvery modern OS and design tool. All modern browsers.
OTF is stronger at
Advanced typographic features. Better multilingual support. Cross-platform.
WOFF2 is stronger at
The smallest web font format available. Supported by all current browsers. Directly reduces page load time.

Why convert OTF to WOFF2?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of OTF: web delivery. WOFF2 is the better fit when serving fonts on any modern website.

OTF limitations that prompt the switch
Uncompressed, so it is a poor web font. Advanced features need application support to be usable.
What you give up
No support in browsers older than roughly 2016. Not installable as a desktop font.

What is preserved when converting OTF to WOFF2?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
