WMV and OGG explained

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media video container, tied to Windows Media Player and rarely supported elsewhere.

OGG here means Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec that predates Opus. It is competitive with AAC and remains common in games.

Where WMV files come from
Old Windows recordings, corporate training videos and PowerPoint exports.
Where OGG is used
Game audio, Spotify's older streams and open-source projects.

WMV vs OGG

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

OGG is stronger at
Royalty-free. Good quality per bit. Well supported in game engines and browsers.

Why convert WMV to OGG?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A WMV file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to OGG discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

WMV limitations that prompt the switch
Windows-only in practice. No browser support. Some files carry DRM that blocks conversion.
What you give up
Apple devices do not support it natively. Largely superseded by Opus.

Does converting WMV to OGG reduce quality?

WMV stores your data exactly; OGG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your WMV original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

The soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded. Quality is limited by whatever the video already contained — extracting to FLAC cannot add detail back.
