MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Why convert WMV to MP3?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A WMV file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to MP3 discards the picture and keeps the sound. Does converting WMV to MP3 reduce quality?
