WMV and GIF explained

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media video container, tied to Windows Media Player and rarely supported elsewhere.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Where WMV files come from: Old Windows recordings, corporate training videos and PowerPoint exports.

Why convert WMV to GIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WMV: sharing with anyone not on Windows. GIF is the better fit when you need a short animation that autoplays in a context where video is not allowed.
