WMV and MOV explained

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media video container, tied to Windows Media Player and rarely supported elsewhere.

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. Structurally it is very close to MP4 — the two share an ancestor — but MOV files often use codecs like ProRes that general-purpose players cannot decode.

Where WMV files come from
Old Windows recordings, corporate training videos and PowerPoint exports.
Where MOV is used
iPhone and Mac screen recordings, and professional video editing.

WMV vs MOV

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

MOV is stronger at
Excellent on Apple platforms. Supports high-quality editing codecs such as ProRes. Handles alpha channels for compositing.

Why convert WMV to MOV?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WMV: sharing with anyone not on Windows. MOV is the better fit when you are editing on a Mac or working in a professional post-production pipeline.

WMV limitations that prompt the switch
Windows-only in practice. No browser support. Some files carry DRM that blocks conversion.
What you give up
Windows and Android support is inconsistent. Browsers generally will not play it.

Does converting WMV to MOV reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
