WAV and Opus explained

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

Opus is the current state of the art for lossy audio, and the codec behind most voice calls you make over the internet. It performs well across an unusually wide range, from 6 kbps speech to transparent music.

Why convert WAV to Opus?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WAV: distribution or storage on a phone. Opus is the better fit when voice content, or any situation where bandwidth is tight.

There is also a size argument: WAV stores data with little or no compression, so the Opus version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

Does converting WAV to Opus reduce quality?

WAV stores your data exactly; Opus does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your WAV original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.
