WAV and FLAC explained

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

FLAC compresses audio losslessly, typically to about half the size of WAV. Decompressed, it is bit-for-bit identical to the original — the compression is mathematical, not perceptual.

Why convert WAV to FLAC?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WAV: distribution or storage on a phone. FLAC is the better fit when archiving music you may want to re-encode later, or storing CD rips.

There is also a size argument: WAV stores data with little or no compression, so the FLAC version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

Very large files. No standard metadata support worth relying on. Impractical for distribution.
What you give up
Much larger than MP3 or AAC. Not supported natively by all portable devices.

Does converting WAV to FLAC reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
