WAV and MP3 explained

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Why convert WAV to MP3?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of WAV: distribution or storage on a phone. MP3 is the better fit when you need audio that will play anywhere, on anything, without question.

There is also a size argument: WAV stores data with little or no compression, so the MP3 version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

WAV limitations that prompt the switch: Very large files. No standard metadata support worth relying on. Impractical for distribution.
What you give up: Lossy — discarded detail cannot be recovered. Beaten on quality-per-byte by AAC and Opus.

Does converting WAV to MP3 reduce quality?

WAV stores your data exactly; MP3 does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your WAV original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

Converting MP3 to a lossless format like FLAC does not restore quality. It produces a larger file containing exactly the same degraded audio.
