TS and MP3 explained

MPEG Transport Stream was designed for broadcast, where a receiver might tune in at any moment. It is built from small self-contained packets, which makes it resilient to errors but awkward to edit.

MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Why convert TS to MP3?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A TS file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to MP3 discards the picture and keeps the sound.
