TS to AAC Converter

Turn TS files into AAC in a couple of clicks. Broadcast and camcorder stream format (AVCHD). The successor to MP3 — better quality per bit. The output is re-encoded, so quality depends on the settings you choose.

TS and AAC explained

MPEG Transport Stream was designed for broadcast, where a receiver might tune in at any moment. It is built from small self-contained packets, which makes it resilient to errors but awkward to edit.

AAC is the successor to MP3 and is the default audio codec for MP4 video, Apple Music and YouTube. At the same bitrate it generally sounds noticeably better than MP3.

Where TS files come from
AVCHD camcorders, TV recordings, and HLS streaming segments.
Where AAC is used
Streaming services, video soundtracks and Apple devices.

TS vs AAC

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

TS is stronger at
Robust to data loss. Can be joined by simple concatenation. The backbone of HLS streaming.
AAC is stronger at
Better quality per bit than MP3. The standard audio track for MP4 video. Excellent device support.

Why convert TS to AAC?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A TS file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to AAC discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

TS limitations that prompt the switch
Editors often refuse it. No browser support as a standalone file. Higher overhead than MP4.
What you give up
Still lossy. Patent licensing applies to encoders.

Does converting TS to AAC reduce quality?

TS stores your data exactly; AAC does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your TS original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

The soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded. Quality is limited by whatever the video already contained — extracting to FLAC cannot add detail back.
