TS and M4A explained

MPEG Transport Stream was designed for broadcast, where a receiver might tune in at any moment. It is built from small self-contained packets, which makes it resilient to errors but awkward to edit.

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

Where TS files come from: AVCHD camcorders, TV recordings, and HLS streaming segments.
Where M4A is used: iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.

Why convert TS to M4A?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A TS file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to M4A discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

TS limitations that prompt the switch: Editors often refuse it. No browser support as a standalone file. Higher overhead than MP4.
What you give up: Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.
