MPEG and WAV explained

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 program streams are the formats behind Video CDs and DVDs. They are decades old and very inefficient by modern standards.

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

Where MPEG files come from
DVD rips, old camcorders and broadcast archives.
Where WAV is used
Recording sessions, sample libraries and audio editing.

MPEG vs WAV

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

MPEG is stronger at
Plays in most desktop media players. Well-understood, stable specification.
WAV is stronger at
Perfect fidelity with zero compression artefacts. No decoding overhead, so editors scrub instantly. Universally supported.

Why convert MPEG to WAV?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MPEG file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to WAV discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

Be aware of the size trade-off: WAV is uncompressed, so expect the converted file to be considerably larger than the MPEG you started with.

MPEG limitations that prompt the switch
Far larger than MP4 for the same quality. No browser support. Limited resolution in practice.
What you give up
Very large files. No standard metadata support worth relying on.

Does converting MPEG to WAV reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
