MPEG and M4A explained

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 program streams are the formats behind Video CDs and DVDs. They are decades old and very inefficient by modern standards.

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

Where MPEG files come from
DVD rips, old camcorders and broadcast archives.
Where M4A is used
iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.

MPEG vs M4A

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

MPEG is stronger at
Plays in most desktop media players. Well-understood, stable specification.
M4A is stronger at
Excellent quality per byte. Proper chapter support, which is why audiobooks use it. Strong metadata and artwork handling.

Why convert MPEG to M4A?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MPEG file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to M4A discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MPEG limitations that prompt the switch
Far larger than MP4 for the same quality. No browser support. Limited resolution in practice.
What you give up
Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.

Does converting MPEG to M4A reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
