MPEG and FLAC explained

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 program streams are the formats behind Video CDs and DVDs. They are decades old and very inefficient by modern standards.

FLAC compresses audio losslessly, typically to about half the size of WAV. Decompressed, it is bit-for-bit identical to the original — the compression is mathematical, not perceptual.

Where MPEG files come from: DVD rips, old camcorders and broadcast archives.
Where FLAC is used: Hi-fi music libraries and archival rips of physical media.

Why convert MPEG to FLAC?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MPEG file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to FLAC discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MPEG limitations that prompt the switch: Far larger than MP4 for the same quality. No browser support. Limited resolution in practice.
What you give up: Much larger than MP3 or AAC. Not supported natively by all portable devices.
