MPEG and GIF explained

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 program streams are the formats behind Video CDs and DVDs. They are decades old and very inefficient by modern standards.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

Where MPEG files come from: DVD rips, old camcorders and broadcast archives.
Where GIF is used: Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.

MPEG is stronger at: Plays in most desktop media players. Well-understood, stable specification.
GIF is stronger at: Animation plays anywhere without a video player. Universally supported, including in email and old forums. Lossless within its 256-colour limit.

Why convert MPEG to GIF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of MPEG: anything new. GIF is the better fit when you need a short animation that autoplays in a context where video is not allowed.

MPEG limitations that prompt the switch: Far larger than MP4 for the same quality. No browser support. Limited resolution in practice.
What you give up: 256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4.

Does converting MPEG to GIF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
