MPEG and OGG explained

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 program streams are the formats behind Video CDs and DVDs. They are decades old and very inefficient by modern standards.

OGG here means Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec that predates Opus. It is competitive with AAC and remains common in games.

Where MPEG files come from
DVD rips, old camcorders and broadcast archives.
Where OGG is used
Game audio, Spotify's older streams and open-source projects.

MPEG vs OGG

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Royalty-free. Good quality per bit. Well supported in game engines and browsers.

Why convert MPEG to OGG?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MPEG file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to OGG discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MPEG limitations that prompt the switch
Far larger than MP4 for the same quality. No browser support. Limited resolution in practice.
What you give up
Apple devices do not support it natively. Largely superseded by Opus.

Does converting MPEG to OGG reduce quality?

MPEG stores your data exactly; OGG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your MPEG original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

The soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded. Quality is limited by whatever the video already contained — extracting to FLAC cannot add detail back.
