M4A and MP3 explained

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Where M4A files come from: iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.
Where MP3 is used: Music libraries, podcasts and voice recordings.

Why convert M4A to MP3?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of M4A: you need certainty that any device will play it. MP3 is the better fit when you need audio that will play anywhere, on anything, without question.

M4A limitations that prompt the switch: Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.
What you give up: Lossy — discarded detail cannot be recovered. Beaten on quality-per-byte by AAC and Opus.

Does converting M4A to MP3 reduce quality?

M4A stores your data exactly; MP3 does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your M4A original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

Converting MP3 to a lossless format like FLAC does not restore quality. It produces a larger file containing exactly the same degraded audio.
