M4A and AAC explained

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

AAC is the successor to MP3 and is the default audio codec for MP4 video, Apple Music and YouTube. At the same bitrate it generally sounds noticeably better than MP3.

Where M4A files come from: iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.
Where AAC is used: Streaming services, video soundtracks and Apple devices.

Why convert M4A to AAC?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of M4A: you need certainty that any device will play it. AAC is the better fit when modern streaming, or the audio track of a video.

M4A limitations that prompt the switch: Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.
What you give up: Still lossy. Patent licensing applies to encoders.

Does converting M4A to AAC reduce quality?

M4A stores your data exactly; AAC does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your M4A original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.
