AMR and WAV explained

AMR is a narrowband speech codec designed for mobile phone calls. It is optimised specifically for the frequency range of the human voice and sounds poor for anything else.

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

Where AMR files come from
Voice memos and voicemail from older phones.
Where WAV is used
Recording sessions, sample libraries and audio editing.

AMR vs WAV

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert AMR to WAV?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of AMR: always — convert to MP3 or WAV so the recording stays usable. WAV is the better fit when recording, editing, mastering, or handing audio to another tool.

Be aware of the size trade-off: WAV is uncompressed, so expect the converted file to be considerably larger than the AMR you started with.

AMR limitations that prompt the switch
Terrible for music. Very limited playback support. Low sample rate ceiling.
What you give up
Very large files. No standard metadata support worth relying on.

Does converting AMR to WAV reduce quality?

Going from AMR to WAV moves already-compressed data into a format that stores it exactly. Nothing is lost from this point on, but nothing is recovered either — the detail AMR discarded when the file was first created is gone permanently. Expect a noticeably larger file for identical visual quality.
