MP4 and WAV explained

MP4 is a container, not a codec. It usually holds H.264 video and AAC audio, and that specific combination is the closest thing the internet has to a universal video format.

WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio — the raw samples, exactly as captured. A stereo CD-quality minute is roughly 10 MB, which is the price of having no compression whatsoever.

Why convert MP4 to WAV?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MP4 file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to WAV discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

Be aware of the size trade-off: WAV is uncompressed, so expect the converted file to be considerably larger than the MP4 you started with.

MP4 limitations that prompt the switch: H.264 carries patent licensing obligations for commercial distribution at scale. Less flexible than MKV for multiple audio tracks and subtitles.
What you give up: Very large files. No standard metadata support worth relying on.

Does converting MP4 to WAV reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

“MP4” tells you nothing about quality. An MP4 can hold anything from a pristine 4K master to a heavily compressed clip.
