MP4 and MOV explained

MP4 is a container, not a codec. It usually holds H.264 video and AAC audio, and that specific combination is the closest thing the internet has to a universal video format.

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. Structurally it is very close to MP4 — the two share an ancestor — but MOV files often use codecs like ProRes that general-purpose players cannot decode.

Where MP4 files come from: Phone cameras, screen recorders, and every video streaming platform.
Where MOV is used: iPhone and Mac screen recordings, and professional video editing.

Why convert MP4 to MOV?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of MP4: you need many embedded subtitle and audio tracks, where MKV is better suited. MOV is the better fit when you are editing on a Mac or working in a professional post-production pipeline.

MP4 limitations that prompt the switch: H.264 carries patent licensing obligations for commercial distribution at scale. Less flexible than MKV for multiple audio tracks and subtitles.
What you give up: Windows and Android support is inconsistent. Browsers generally will not play it.

Does converting MP4 to MOV reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

“MP4” tells you nothing about quality. An MP4 can hold anything from a pristine 4K master to a heavily compressed clip.
