Privacy, in plain words
What “uploaded” normally means. On most online converters, pressing the button copies your file across the internet onto a computer owned by that website. That copy is what the word “upload” means, and it is the part nobody explains.
What happens instead. This site does not do it. There is no server here that receives files, so your ODT file is read, converted and handed back by the browser you are using right now. It never travels — so there is no copy to store, read, leak or hand over.

A Word file is usually a draft — which means it carries the things that were not meant to be final, and often tracked changes and comments nobody removed. It matters more than it sounds, because of what documents usually are:
Legal letters and NDAs
privileged material, and named third parties
Tenancy and loan agreements
identity details plus your financial position
Medical and clinical reports
patient information that is regulated in most countries
Unpublished manuscripts
work whose value depends on it not circulating
A file that is never sent cannot be kept, leaked, subpoenaed or used to train anything. That is a property of how this works, not a promise about how carefully it is run.
ODT is the OpenDocument text format, an ISO standard that works much like DOCX — a ZIP of XML — but developed openly rather than by a single vendor.
HTML is the markup language of the web, describing document structure — headings, paragraphs, lists, links — which browsers then render.
The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

People make this switch when they run into the limits of ODT: sending to Word users who need pixel-accurate formatting. HTML is the better fit when publishing on the web or generating documents programmatically.
The content survives; the layout is rebuilt. Text and the order it is read in carry across, but HTML lays the page out again rather than reproducing ODT's exact positioning, so line breaks, page breaks and spacing will differ. Anything that depends on precise placement is worth checking in the result.
