ODT and DOCX explained

ODT is the OpenDocument text format, an ISO standard that works much like DOCX — a ZIP of XML — but developed openly rather than by a single vendor.

DOCX is a ZIP archive containing XML that describes a Word document's content and formatting. Renaming one to .zip and opening it shows the structure directly.

Where ODT files come from: LibreOffice, OpenOffice and public-sector document policies.
Where DOCX is used: Microsoft Word, Google Docs exports and Pages exports.

Why convert ODT to DOCX?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of ODT: sending to Word users who need pixel-accurate formatting. DOCX is the better fit when the document is still being written or reviewed.

ODT limitations that prompt the switch: Word support exists but loses some formatting. Less common in commercial settings.
What you give up: Layout can shift between applications and font availability. Not suitable as a final, fixed-layout deliverable.
