GIF and WebM explained

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with support for simple animation and one fully transparent colour. Its longevity is cultural rather than technical — nothing about it is efficient by modern standards.

WebM is an open, royalty-free container built for the web, holding VP8/VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. It exists specifically so browsers can ship video support without patent licensing.

Where GIF files come from: Reaction images, simple UI animations, and screen recordings shared in chat.
Where WebM is used: Web video, and exports from browser-based recording tools.

Why convert GIF to WebM?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of GIF: the content is photographic, longer than a few seconds, or would be better as MP4 or WebM. WebM is the better fit when serving video on your own website.

GIF limitations that prompt the switch: 256 colours per frame, so photographs and gradients look banded. Enormous files compared with video — often 5–10× an equivalent MP4. Transparency is binary: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent, producing jagged edges.
What you give up: Poor support in desktop players, editors and on TVs. Slower to encode than H.264.

Does converting GIF to WebM reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A GIF is not a video. It is a sequence of full images with no interframe compression, which is exactly why it is so large.
