EPUB and PDF explained

EPUB is essentially a website in a box — a ZIP of XHTML and CSS. Because the content is reflowable, the reader chooses the font size and the text re-wraps, rather than being locked to a page.

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

Where EPUB files come from
E-book stores, library lending and self-publishing.
Where PDF is used
Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.

EPUB vs PDF

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

PDF is stronger at
Looks identical on every device, in every viewer, when printed. Supports digital signatures, forms and embedded fonts. Universally readable without special software.

Why convert EPUB to PDF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of EPUB: layout-critical content such as illustrated children's books or technical manuals with precise figures. PDF is the better fit when sharing a finished document where the layout must not move.

EPUB limitations that prompt the switch
Kindle needs conversion or a different format. Fixed-layout content such as comics works poorly. Rendering varies between readers.
What you give up
Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run.

What is preserved when converting EPUB to PDF?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.
