Privacy, in plain words
What “uploaded” normally means. On most online converters, pressing the button copies your file across the internet onto a computer owned by that website. That copy is what the word “upload” means, and it is the part nobody explains.
What happens instead. This site does not do it. There is no server here that receives files, so your document is read, converted and handed back by the browser you are using right now. It never travels — so there is no copy to store, read, leak or hand over.

A Word file is usually a draft — which means it carries the things that were not meant to be final, and often tracked changes and comments nobody removed. It matters more than it sounds, because of what documents usually are:
Unpublished manuscripts
work whose value depends on it not circulating
Employment contracts
salary, notice periods, restraint clauses
A CV or résumé
home address, phone number, date of birth, full work history
Legal letters and NDAs
privileged material, and named third parties
A file that is never sent cannot be kept, leaked, subpoenaed or used to train anything. That is a property of how this works, not a promise about how carefully it is run.
When compatibility matters more than fidelity. RTF is the format to send someone whose software you cannot ask about — it has been readable by essentially every word processor for decades.
If you know the recipient has Word or Google Docs, .docx is the better choice: it keeps heading styles as styles and supports structure RTF simply has no way to express.
Each control marks up real structure while you write, and the converter lays that out faithfully in the RTF document: headings get their own size and spacing, a bullet list is indented and marked, a table is drawn with its cells and header row.
What does not come across is the structure underneath. The RTF document records how the document looks, not what its parts are — so a heading is larger text rather than an entry a reader can navigate by, and there is no outline pane, no tagging, and nothing for a screen reader to announce as a heading. If you need that, use the Word or ODT version of this tool, whose headings are real heading styles.
There is no control for typeface, text size or colour on individual words, and that is deliberate rather than unfinished. Those would be per-word styling, and the honest position is that a button which silently does nothing is worse than one that is not there.
Document-level choices — page size and the typeface for the whole document — are in the settings panel beside the editor, because they apply to the finished file rather than to a selection.
Images cannot be placed from the editor. Everything here is text you typed or pasted, which is also why nothing has to be uploaded.
